Decisions

Four times the obviousanswer was wrong

Every project had an easy way out. Here is what it was, why it would have failed, and what we did instead.

  1. The easy answerEvery city service on the home screenResidents had no direct way to reach the council. A screen full of options is one more wall. What we didKeep only the eight services people come forCity app · SDE: 250+ reports from 100 testers in the first week
  2. The easy answerA form with a send buttonThat is what every tool like it does, and the citizen never hears back. What we didTwenty days in police stations first, and a report that stays open until it is solvedReportero: 200+ officers tested it in the field
  3. The easy answerLook like every other ministryThe lab had to win ministries over. Looking like them gives nobody a reason to come. What we didA site that earns their trust, then a 3D town you explore on a scooterInnovation lab: 3× more citizens at its events
  4. The easy answerA site that only explains the proceduresPeople still had to find out which office handled each one. What we didThree connected products, so every request reaches someoneSEDECINE: 21 services in one place

What I do

Four problemsI usually get hired for

Most projects start with one of these. Each one points to a project on this page, so you can see the work before you write.

You need a product from zero.
From the first question to the launch: research with the people who will use it, the user experience, the screens, and staying with the developers until it ships. Reportero took six months, start to finish. The city app, three.
You have a product that stopped working.
I research with real users, redesign it, and leave a design system — shared rules and components — so it stays consistent as the product grows. The innovation lab: citizen turnout tripled after its relaunch.
Your brand and your product say different things.
A brand identity, a tone of voice and a visual system, so your brand and your product tell people the same thing. I designed the innovation lab’s logo and co-designed the one OGTIC still uses.
Nobody is forced to use your product.
Public services, industry portals, anything people can simply close. If it is confusing, they leave, and that is what makes it hard. SEDECINE: 21 film-industry services in one place.

How do you work? How do you work?

How I work

I ask first.I build after

Five steps, always in this order. The first takes the longest, because if it goes wrong, the other four can’t fix it.

  1. AskWho uses it, and for what? Reportero: twenty days in police stations.
  2. FrameThe real problem. SEDECINE needed one place, not just a website.
  3. CutWhat nobody asked for. The city app refused a ninth service.
  4. TestIn real hands, early. 200+ officers tried Reportero.
  5. ShipStay until it’s used, then hand it over. HMC now publishes on its own.

About me

How I gothere

Who I am, what I write, and what people I have worked with say about me.

My name is Francifelly Bencosme. Everyone calls me Fran. I live in Santo Domingo, I studied multimedia at ITLA, and I have worked in design since 2008.

I started at Theorem, a local advertising agency focused on digital ads. I spent four years there working with Celtra and Amazon, and by the end I was a senior visual designer with several clients. Nobody there accepted “good enough”.

Then came startups, where a product is born, breaks and becomes something else in a season. They taught me to treat change as the material, not the accident.

At OGTIC, the Dominican state’s digital office, I designed the brand of its innovation lab, the Reportero app and the city app. Real problems. A form that has to work on a Tuesday, for someone who never chose it. There a screen stops being a design and becomes someone’s day.

Now I design product at Banco BHD, where I led the design of the acquisition journey, and I run Redviver, my own studio. What I took from all of it: I look for the problem behind the brief, and I stay until someone uses the thing.

Questions

Do you work outside the Dominican Republic?
Yes. What I have built is used in more than a dozen countries. Remote is the norm, not the exception.
Do you only design, or do you stay to the end?
I stay. A design is not delivered when the file is approved: it is delivered when someone uses it and gets what they came for.
What do you need from me to start?
The problem as you see it, and access to whoever lives with it. Not a spec.
What kind of projects do you take?
The ones where UX, product and brand are one thing and not three briefs. Above all, the ones nobody is obliged to use.
What does it cost?
No rate card. You get a number after the first conversation and before anything starts.
How long does it take?
It depends, and I would rather say so than give a number I have to take back. The city app was three months; the reporting one, six.
